Flexible new Rogue satisfies Napier need

There’s a new bar in town, joining the already impressive collection of hospo venues within Napier’s CBD.

Rogue Hop Speakeasy, designed with the local market in mind, unashamedly showcases the ‘best of local’ beer, wines and spirits available in Hawke’s Bay and around the country.

Co-owners Carol and Jeremy Bayliss have been keen on opening a CBD venue with a speakeasy neighbourhood vibe for some time. “We’re passionate about the origin of the products we stock and feature exclusively New Zealand owned companies,” Jeremy says.

Opening a couple of months late due to Covid-19, Rogue is the second venue for these hospo linchpins and the sibling to their popular destination hotel, Westshore Beach Inn, which the couple has run since 2005. (Former venues include The Criterion and Shed 2.)

At Rogue, there’s outdoor sidewalk seating available and inside, the bright and airy space flows over three levels. The work of local artists and artisans enhances the quirky, individual Rogue Hop ethos, which saw a determination to unfurl the welcome mat to female customers as well. Attention to relevant detail reveals a lighter, softer touch with furnishings as well as separate female loos.

From Wednesday to Sunday, doors open at 9am for coffee and daily changing pastries, before transitioning to a café bar throughout the day. At last, those wanting a late afternoon coffee have a place to go, before the night time speakeasy takes over, with closing time at 10pm.

Food wise, two popular tapas-inspired menus have hit the spot. Beyond Tapas features Turkish meatballs, Rice paper Rolls, Chicharrones, Pig & Salt sausages with sauerkraut, roasted peppers and slaw, plus Pig & Salt’s champagne and pistachio pate.

Cleverly navigating the maze that is dietary needs, the Dietary Tapas menu covers four main diet styles – Keto, Gluten Free, Vegetarian and Vegan, and provides tasty riffs inspired by the Beyond Tapas menu.

Rogue Hop is all about easy-going comfort, quality Kiwi food and drinks and no loud music. There’s plenty to enjoy.
