Pint & a pie please

Carlsberg is globally recognised for creating  a great beer and now the brewing masters have taken things to a whole new level, creating probably the best pie in the world, right here in New Zealand!

As we’re a nation of pie-lovers, Carlsberg is giving the good old Kiwi Steak & Cheese a bit of an upgrade. Partnering with local pie royalty, Heaven Scent Food Co, they’ve created a mouthwatering recipe that uses grass-fed Angus beef, marinated in a special blend of herbs and spices. This is then cooked low and slow in a Carlsberg stock and a medley of summer vegetables. The deliciously buttery, flakey savoury short pastry is made with Carlsberg’s malted barley, and – to ensure no beer ingredient is left out – there’s even yeast extract under the New Zealand Emmental cheese on top.

“Carlsberg is probably the best beer in the world, so creating probably the best pie in the world was no mean feat. We spent weeks crafting the perfect recipe. The flavours of the Angus beef and seasonal vegetables perfectly compliment the light lager gravy and to add another dimension, we’ve layered in a little NZ Emmental cheese, making this the ideal summer pie,” says Nikki Ross head chef and founder of Heaven Scent Food Co. Pie and beer lovers will have four days to experience the Kiwi pie at a pop-up Carlsberg pie bar in Imperial Lane. The pop-up pie bar opens from Tuesday 12 December through to Thursday 14 December, from 12-3pm daily and 4-7pm on Friday 15 December.

A limited number of 1,000 pies will be available.

Many will undoubtedly agree that pies and beers go together hand-in-hand, however the origin of

probably the best pie in the world links back to the pH scale, which Carlsberg invented over 100 years ago, in 1909. It revolutionised the Carlsberg brewing process and countless other fields, including horticulture. Farmers today use the pH scale to measure the quality of their soil when producing thefinest meat and vegetables and it is these ingredients that have gone into the creation of the Carlsberg pie, along with the beer itself.

“When you’re determined to brew the world’s best beer you discover a thing or two along the way, which is how Carlsberg discovered the pH scale in 1909. To bring this discovery to life we wanted to see if wecould make probably the best pie in the world. We think it’s the best pie we’ve ever tasted and would love to invite Kiwi pie aficionados to tell us what they think,” says Anna Lawrence, Marketing Director Carlsberg New Zealand.

For a limited time, pie lovers can get probably the best pie in the world free when they purchasea pint of Carlsberg from the Imperial Lane pop-up pie window.
