Art collaboration brings 40 new works to Cordis Auckland

Cordis Auckland has marked the second anniversary of the award-winning Pinnacle Tower opening, with the unveiling of one of the largest locally curated art collections created by nine prominent New Zealand artists on its premises.

Franz Mascarenhas, Managing Director Cordis Auckland says the Cordis Pinnacle Tower has redefined and reimagined the standards of quality and the overall guest experience at Cordis Auckland, the heart of hospitality.

“A true symbol of Cordis’ unwavering commitment to excellence, the Pinnacle Tower proudly stands as an award-winning hotel. This anniversary is particularly special for us, as we celebrate the creation of a destination that goes beyond luxurious accommodations—it embodies our community and its significance.

“Cordis Auckland now proudly houses one of the largest locally commissioned art collections. Curated by Coupland Cormack, it comprises 40 innovative commissions across various mediums, created by nine of New Zealand’s most prominent contemporary artists.

The remarkable collection is the result of a collaboration with Ngāti Whātua ki Kaipara and Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei, reflecting the hotel’s deep connection to the land, culture, and community that surrounds it.

“Our aim was to curate a collection that establishes an emotional connection with guests, both charging and enlivening the environment. The Cordis collection activates art’s innate ability to transform and influence the visitor’s experience of public space.

“We have curated a suite of major and immersive installations and site-responsive art works that envelope the viewer, aimed at enhancing and enriching every guest’s journey throughout the hotel,” said Emily Cormack and Sophie Coupland, of Coupland Cormack, who curated the project .

With over fifty years of experience jointly, Sophie Coupland and Emily Cormack came together to provide large-scale public, hospitality and corporate fine art solutions.

The elements of luxury are seamlessly extended through the impressive Pinnacle Tower Club Lounge on Level 14, with breath taking views. Here, guests are able to enjoy afternoon tea, evening cocktails and canapes, whilst admiring the art pieces and view, or they can choose to use the library as a serene meeting space.

The Chairman’s Suite is the height of luxury atop Pinnacle Tower. As one of the largest Chairman’s Suites in Auckland, it exudes opulence and hosts a range of dignitaries and business leaders to rock stars. The art piece in the Chairman’s Suite leads out to the stunning outdoor area, with a fireplace to add comfort on the cooler nights.

Each carefully considered detail shows how these narratives and philosophies have been ingrained across the design and art curation of Cordis Auckland and, in the spirit of manaakitanga (hospitality) and manawa (heartfelt welcome), so that every guest will feel the power of the whenua throughout their journey at the hotel.

Located on Symonds Street, the Pinnacle Tower at Cordis Auckland has also been busy hosting the National, Act and NZ First party negotiations this week as they discuss the formation of the incoming New Zealand government.

A beautifully produced book ‘The Cordis Art Collection’ is available for purchase at the hotel.
